I’d rather be Steve’s friend than be his doctor, but I got this physician on the phone for at least an hour. I said, “Here are my concerns. You need to get your shit together. Steve should not be treated with subquality care. You should raise the bar.”

As far as I could tell, they had a bunch of fricking foreign doctors who didn’t know their ass from a hole in the ground. You can’t fool me or Steve, because we’ve been through this already. We know who these doctors are, and they’re poorly trained. They treat patients very poorly.

I said, “I know Steve can be very tough, and he has earned that! I know that. However, he’s a great doctor, and if you guys don’t get your act together, you’re going to kill him. If he lives, there’s going to be a lawsuit because my friend is not benefiting from good care.”

I mean come on, you do an abscess drain and you puncture the diaphragm and you give the guy a chylothorax. Are you kidding me? It was so hard to watch. Steve called me the weekend before his second surgery, which was done because he had such severe complications. He even sent me the pictures after with his tubes coming out of his chest. Steve didn’t eat for four days, he was petrified they were going to kill him, he lost 42 pounds.

He called me and said, “I’m calling because I want you to know you’re a true friend, but I may not be around on Monday. This could be it.” That’s how bad it was. I’ve seen him exaggerate, but this, I knew it was true. Steve does not lie.

The guy was literally dying, and it was because of the healthcare system and how bad the care was.

You’d better believe I want to sue, but nobody will take the case. Three, four law firms said that to have a winning lawsuit, you have to have causation. This truth is to take on such a large case a law firm would have had to lay out close to $1 million and the risk-benefit ratio was not worth the risk. Why bother helping somebody on principle, or do what’s just? Easy answer if no money, no principle. Even though malpractice was confidentially admitted already, because the hospital did an investigation, the lawyers say that they can’t prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Narcan can be linked to the pancreatic ductal leak.

It kept me in the hospital for six months, and even knowing the system inside and out, I couldn’t prevent it from happening to me.

According to Debra Richards, “It was a scary time, but Doctor Soloway is a fighter. He pulled himself through it and came back better than ever. He is swimming, biking, and working like a dog.”

My story proves that adherence to protocol is far more dangerous than occasional lack of thought. Why would the nurse think to administer the Narcan? It’s not like my pulse or respiratory rate was dropping.
